Quick answer: For most small Indian online stores, Razorpay is the easiest to start with (fast activation, fewer documents, strong support, higher charges). Cashfree suits GST-registered businesses that want better pricing and can handle more paperwork. Several of my clients had failed payments, stuck settlements and hard-to-reach support with PhonePe.
Every online store owner I work with asks me the same question in the first week: “Which payment gateway should I use?”
I build and fix online stores for a living, so I have set up checkouts with many gateways. Three names come up again and again: Razorpay, Cashfree and PhonePe. Everything below comes from what my clients told me after using them in real stores, not from a brochure.
One point first. This is client feedback, not a lab test. Your own experience can differ, so read it as a guide and not a verdict.
What actually matters when you pick a gateway
Most people compare only the fee percentage. In practice, five things decide whether a gateway is good for you:
- How fast you can go live. Every day of waiting is a day without sales.
- How many documents it asks for. This matters a lot for new or small businesses.
- How often payments fail. A failed payment is a lost order, often for good.
- How quickly and clearly settlements arrive. Your cash flow depends on it.
- Whether support answers when something breaks. This is the one you only value when you need it.

Razorpay: smooth start and strong support
Of the three, Razorpay is the one my clients are happiest with on service.
- Onboarding is smooth. Many clients were active within minutes. Sometimes it takes 2 to 3 days, but the process stays clear.
- It asks for fewer documents. For a new business without many papers, this is a big advantage.
- Support is the best of the three. When something goes wrong, clients get a real reply.
The catch: charges are higher than the others. You are paying a little more for an easy start and good support.
Best for: new stores, small teams, and anyone who wants to start selling quickly without chasing paperwork.
Cashfree: more paperwork, better pricing once you are live
Cashfree asks more of you at the start.
- GST is mandatory. If you are not GST registered yet, you cannot get going.
- More documents and more verification. Onboarding takes more effort than Razorpay.
- Service and pricing are an advantage. Once you are through onboarding, clients found the service and pricing strong.
Best for: GST-registered businesses that watch costs and can handle a longer setup.
PhonePe: where clients ran into trouble
I want to be fair here. PhonePe is a well-known name and many people use it every day. But several of my clients had a poor experience with the PhonePe payment gateway for business:
- Payments failed from time to time.
- Settlement amounts got stuck with no indication of why. Money was frozen and nothing told them what was wrong.
- Support was very hard to reach. There was no phone support to call when it mattered.
Gateway charges were fine. The problem was never the fee. It was what happens when something breaks and nobody answers. A frozen settlement with no explanation can hurt a small business badly, because you still have suppliers, ads and salaries to pay.
If you already use PhonePe and it works well for you, great. But I do not recommend it first to my clients because of this feedback.

So which one should you choose?
Keep it simple:
- Want to go live fast with little paperwork? Choose Razorpay.
- GST registered and watching your costs? Choose Cashfree and accept the longer setup.
- Tempted by the PhonePe brand name? Check the support and settlement experience first, and keep a backup gateway.
A small saving is not worth money stuck for days with nobody to call. I always tell clients to pick support over a small percentage saving.
Three tips before you go live
- Run a test order end to end. Pay, refund and check the settlement report before launch day.
- Do not rely on one gateway. Keep a backup so a bad day does not stop your sales.
